Imagery inspriation
As on the development, I need to get my inspiration to create the best imagery for my book cover. I will justify why these potential imagery were chosen. This includes what they signify.
For the art style, I will use a variety of bitmap and vector based images to meet the breif's requirements. The design will consists of mainly of illustrations to make the visual language to appeal to 12 year olds and the parents who purchases the books on their children's behalf. These illustrations will have traits of the 1960's art by applying blocks of shadow, making more dynamic. This is seen on the image of girl crying.
The images of the Pepsi Cola bottle and the American diner makes obvious that the background imagery signifies a story that takes place in 1960's America. The book implies that the Greasers mostly favour drinking Pepsi over Cola. The American diner usually have signs above, this would be a great idea for the authors name to be presented as the sign. The typography used on signs have elements of script typeface, making the author's name look vintage. This image is appropriate because the an American diner does appear in the story.
I was inspired by design of mustang because car looks masculine and iconically signifies the Socs. The mustang must be a bitmap an image to make it noticeable. I also like its perspective because it enables the vehicle more captivating and empowering. The shadow also gives it more tension. This could bring an opportunity to use anomlmy to enhance the impact of the mustang. There might be a row of illustrations of the side mustang but there will be another one that has the same perspective as the image above.
This is the second mood board that I have been inspired me these images as a possible theme. The cartoon character and the cyanon would make a big impact in the visual language. Presenting cigarettes as cyanons would most likely cause a reaction from the audience. Combining two elements that people cannot imaging that they would be associated together will come as a surprise. This would make the box make the cover portray an interesting story for their children, which would entice parents to purchase this story.
At this moment, I thinking of applying a newspaper theme if I go follow a path of applying very dramatic scenes of the story. This would include the cinema, fountain, and the church scenes. Rather than use a plain old newspaper, I intend to use the style used by Mister Retro designs. His designs contain features that look elegant, masculine, comical and sad. The use of the graphic style would make the story look vibrant and interesting to the young audience.
Another feature that I may apply to is differentiate the Greasers from the ordinary citizens is the use of figure and ground. All of the people surrounding them look normal but the Greasers may not feature a fill colour or texture. I intend to make the stroke the background is the foreground whistle the stroke is the background. To achieve this effect I might use a puddle of Coca Cola showing the reflection of this.
More detail examples of inspiration
One of the styles of drawing that I would like to develop is the drawing made of artistic strokes. Jorge Colmbo's art work looks very captivating because the imagery look like it has been drawn by a brush. This would make the book cover look artistic. This art style is relevant to the 1960's because computers did not exist at that time and artist relied on brushes, screen printing, and pencils to create the work around the 20th century. To me, the art style causes black of the silhouettes to be more striking to the eye. This is good because this might be the graphical that could make the ramble or the church scenes look very powerful. The only issue with this making the illustrations of the character look clear enough to see.
To emphasise that gangs are involved, I thought it would be an idea to create a logo for each gang. The Greasers would most likely have a cone with greasy hair surrounding it whilst the Soc will have logo showing woman, grades, cars and among other things. This is an essential tool for allowing the audience to understand the differences between them, thus creating a sneak preview for the reader.
