Development story: typography and colour choices justified.

In response of those mood boards that I developed two posts ago, I thought of expanding the colour and typography ideas and justify them.

Primary possible colour scheme

As I stated that specific post, I aimed to have retro colour scheme that is either conveys suspicious or an intense theme.

Mister Retro

As you can see from on the image above, the first colour scheme is inspired by the Mister Retro's artwork. This colour scheme uses different shades of blue to create a design that features colours that blend well.  The light blue represents the highlights, mid blue for the mid tones and the darker blue for the shadow.  This is a great example of a colour pallet that uses similar colours that prevents the design from coming across as dull. Blue does compliments the red  black very well. The dark blue enables the red to be striking, therefore, making it the main focal point.

This is a potential colour scheme because one of my designs includes a night  and a day scene. The dark blue represents the night time whilst the light blue is the day time sky colour. These two colours have got the right saturation that prevents them from coming too striking.  In terms of imagery, blue is iconic because the Soc's mustangs are that specific colour. This colour has also leave me with loads of options. The colour scheme will enable a calm or a dangerous scene to work because blue is associated with different moods: calm, excitement and mystery. Red is a colour that is associated with the American diner. This colour will enable the sign containing the text to stand out. It may enhance the power of the words because red comes across as aggressive. I will not attempt to use this colour as blood because this has to appeal to parents and their children who are in the 8-15 age demographic.

Mister Retro 2

Unlike the first example, the Motorphycho image looks too striking for the audience. However, the colour of the background, cream, appeals to a board audience. It is clean and would enable the blue to look captivating. Cream is a good choice for representing the road marks because it compliments grey, which is the colour of American roads. Applying this into one of my design will create a scheme that has different contrast of colour, making the visual more appealing to the target audience.

San Francisco and Work hard

The one thing that these two images have in common is the use of the colour orange. Orange is the perfect colour for reprinting metal, fire or an image with a dynamic colour scheme. Orange is iconic signifier that symbolises the colour of the Oklahoma flag. This would make obvious to people who are aware about the flag that this story is based in this stage without knowing the book. This is also good colour to bring tension into the design because blue and orange are on the opposite sides of the colour wheel, making them completely different.

Both colour schemes also include blue. The blue with the purple tint is particularly effective because the colour would enhance the impact of the shadows. This will give the design more depth, therefore, making it more captivating to the audience. I do thing that black such a negative colour, this colour will do the design justice because it make the strokes look different.

These are other examples of colours from images that were selected due to their iconic imagery. Most of them though have too many colour that will create too many

The sun set image has got the best colour scheme. Instead of using saturated and primary colours the range have a faded appearence to make the colours of the sunset look clean and relaxing. Blue, green and yellow are not usually a great combination but due good use of saturation levels, they all blend in. I also feel that these colours enable the bright orange light and the black hills to stand out. This could be beneficial for the hills and the lighting effects because America is well known for having bright sun light.

For my font choices, these are just examples of text I intend to use to symbolise many aspects of the story and conveys a retro feel.  I intend to either pay for a very good set of fonts or alter these examples in Illustrator.

The text above is inspired by the Mister Retro. The interior sections of the text features a thin stroke that makes the character resembles a road. The font design complements The Outsiders theme because many scenes feature roads. To ensure that message is conveyed, the font's inner stroke will be dashed. There should not be any shadows or other effects accompanying the design because may reduce the space for the counters. To make this readable, figure and ground should be applied. The dashed lines should appear as if they have entered the text to ensure that title looks interesting.

Although this is not to scale, I feel that to provide the best reading experience, the main body should be serif. To ensure the the 1960's theme is conveyed, I will design my own serif text that readable and has aspects from the story.  The serif should have enough kerning to prevent the serif being illegible.  As for the leading, I aim not  to separated too much to ensure that the audience can read it in appropriate pace.  I am also applying drop caps that features a style representing the imagery, the gangs or the scenes to ensure that the text is captivating. The main body text should be 4x smaller than the heading.

This is another example of a font with a tine outline. I decided chose this possible font style because it looks masculine, a characteristic of both gangs. This will give the overall design a sense of power and sets a crime based theme. To appeal to a female audience, I would have to present it in a way catches their attention. This could range from a menu, Coca Cola or an American sign.  To make the text illegible, the r's appearances  needs changing because the positioning of the counter and the curve makes it resemble of a n.

This would be a great opportunity to create an anomaly make a certain word stand out. This font may possibility be used for the letter 'the'. This ensure that the text is readable.

This a font that has great characteristics.  The design of the characters makes me associate this with American diner at the time of the 1960's.  The design features  capital letters that exceeds the cap and x height. In a way, it is considered as a drop cap, therefore it makes the text readable. The positioning of the cross bar is another attribute that makes this font appealing to look at.

The only issue I have with the text is the outline. I think that  the type face design should get rid off the stroke because it makes it little bit illegible. I think that having a thick fill is a great solution for enhancing the text design. It will be more legible and have still a characteristic of an American diner.

This is a great font that can be effectively used for presenting the author's name. Although it is a script face, it looks modern because the counters are not geometrical. The design of the ascender features a curve that signifies hand drawn writing very well. This is appropriate because many retro artist use this type of font to create a visual language that feels nostalgic. This type of font would be a great addition to the newspaper idea. This will present the art style of 60's to a new generation.

This is the last font that really caught my attention. The design of the san serif makes me associated the design of the font with tire marks.  Tire marks would be a great design to implement because it signifies that these outsiders are breaking the rules by breaking the speed limit on a regular basis. I also think that will bring tension for the mustang and signifies that the car is really fast.

Inspirations from the 1960's art: colour scheme and imagery design

As I have done a lot of research, I thought of getting my inspirations for my typography and colour scheme. The aim for today is to get my inspirations into this blog and analyse more very effective  book covers for the Outsiders.

Before I go into my inspirations, I need to justify why I have decided to produce a cover for The Outsiders. Whilst reading the book, I was able to visualise the characters, the period, the famous icons, products and style. I was then able to develop these basic ideas into sketches.

What A Carve Up in the other hand, was an uninteresting book. By the middle of the book, I gave up reading it because I found it very hard to visualise the story in my head. This therefore made it impossible for my to develop mind maps that responds to the book.

Dynamic colour scheme

This my inspirations for my colour scheme and the style of imagery. This section of the post justifies why colour schemes of the image entices to apply it on the final design.  All of   images above in the move board has a retro feel that symbolises the 1960's.

In terms of the red, I think red symbolises the American diner interior and exteriors colour colour scheme. The use of the colour on some imagery makes graphical elements the main focal point. This colour also relevant because Coca Colo and Pepsi glass bottles feature this on the lable. These symbolic signfiers were among the Greasers' favourite drinks.

To create a large contrast and insert a sense of calmness into the design, I may inset different shades of blue. This colour emphasises a message that the characters spend some their time chilling out.  Many chapters of the story includes scenes of the treasures laying on the floor, especially, Ponyboy dreaming a better future. This type of colour will be used for night time scenes or a book cover of Ponyboy dreaming.

This will be the primary colour of the mustang. The book specifically states that the Soc's vehicle is blue

To create a large contrast for the typography, yellow. If I develop an idea of a cinema or an American Diner theme, this will be one of the primary colours. Yellow is an aggressive colour that was used in the period of Pop Art, especially in Litchenstines art work.  This colour compliments red very well. A combination of these colour makes a design look very dynamic due to both colour being bold. This would benefit the American Diner sign containing the title of the book.

Photographers: Inspirations imagery style

Dorthora Lang

The story regularly brings a sense of sadness that the Greasers experience. Her photos generally feature either emotionless or depressed due to their circumstances. Although the pictures originate from the depression period, I can imagine the mood of photo relating to the hostile life of the Greasers. The picture of the Greasers looking sad or angry makes a bold impact.

Weegee

Weegee's photographs are perfect examples of very powerful images. His images features a bloody crime scene that looks very horrific. Although this is too gory for a 12 year or a parent to view, I will use arbitrary signs, like text, to represent this type of imagery.  I feel this is relevant because a murder and a few fights occur in the story.

Garry Winogrand

Garry's Winogrand's photography convey the opposite feel. The image of the woman dances emphrasies that she is expressing herself. This image iconic symbolises the  creative movements that started in the 1960's. His other artwork includes people enjoying their leisure time. A great example of this is the woman shopping.

Typography

Images with imagery: 1960's

These are my inspirations for my typography from this period. I want to includes a theme on a typography that symbolises America in the 1960. This includes retro billboards, road signs, diners and neon lights. Applying this style of typography into The Outsiders book cover would allow the text to be iconic and arbitrary sigifiers that enhances the theme and connotations of the sign.  These styles are approbate because many scenes feature an American diner and locations.

Typography inspriations (retro)

To develop these themes, I explored typography that conveys 1960's America accurately.  I think style of typeface that symbolises the classic American billboards is script face. Script faces feature elegant curly lines that join all letters together. The only issue that need addressing is the kerning and its legibility. To solve this problem, I need to get a font uses joined up capital letters. This type of font will bye used to for the name of author to make it noticeable. To ensure it is readable, the fist letter should not be joined so that the reader can differentiate the capital letter.

In terms of thick ness, I want to create an anolmy to make a word stand out. I intend to use this attribute on the word "Outsider" to make one of the main focal points.

In terms of normal san serif fonts, the typeface design used by Mister Retro would symbolise the font used on a mustang. The mustang is the primary vehicle for the Socs, applying text with a font resembling font style on the car would be a good arbitrary and iconic signifier that makes a reference to the gang.

To create text that symbolises the Greaser, I will attempt to apply text that looks rough feel. The Greasers live in a hostile part of Tulsa, therefore it would make sense that text that represents their lifestyle is implemented into the design.

Other examples of book covers

Mr Peanut

This is a great example of a book cover using gestalt principles, proximity and similarity to make the design look captivating. The design features loads of brown circles close together that form a large shape resembling of a face, skull or a pea nut.  This design characteristic may causes people to associate the image with a classic video game from the 1980's The main character of the story, Mr Peanut, is a graphic game designer. The use of a symbolic signifiers, the circles, connotes that the story is set in the later 1980's or early 1990's.

The typography on this page looks very dynamic due to the colour scheme. Each word features a different shade of brown to make the colour scheme consistent and natural to the reader. To compel the audience to the read the text, there should be one white letter to create an anomaly.  The arbitrary sign with this characteristic is the title. This book cover features a surname as the title.

The use of the iconic, the skull, conveys a motionless feel. People from across the world recognise this sign as death. This  on a connotation level suggests that this is a crime story includes a murder. The darker shades of brown make this a memorial image because the dark brown makes the eyes look empty.

The Cruel Radiance

This is another book cover that uses a very emotional image to entice readers to explore the book. The writer aims to help understand political violence in order to prevent it from occurring This book mainly relies on the iconic signifier, the sad looking girl and the arbitrary signs, the text, to create a book cover featuring a sad girl looking at the audience. The use of a emotional girl makes the reader feel sad, therefore, it causes the reader to have purpose to read the political book. The arbitrary sign, 'photography and political violence', are formal text tells the user what the is book offers. The book's photos shows people victims of crimes committed by governments.

Black and white emphasises the feeling of hopelessness. The overall colour scheme enhances the impact of the girl looking sad because these colours usually make us feel depressed. The strong light white source reflecting on the skin makes the face the main focal point.

The slab serif typeface creates a formal theme for the book cover. The thickness of the  font makes the kerning causes the text look unnatural for the reader to look at. To improve its legibility, the characters should be separated a little bit.

Eight Weeks of Bruce

This is a book cover thats shows wine being spilt onto a service. The interior section of the red wine features text, which is the title. The large contrast between the background and the wine, and the emboss effect to make the wine look 3D makes the text area the main focal point. The iconic signifiers, the glass and the wine, connotes a character in the story who is a alcoholic.  The arbitrary sign, 'eight weeks', symbolises the amount of time that the female character had a relationship with the alcoholic.

In term of typography, this is post modern style text because it breaks some design rules. The baseline is broken because some letters are not positioned on a straight line. In a way, the scaling of some characters makes the typeface design look disorientating.

1980's art

This is the post that justifies why I was discouraged from developing a cover for What a Carve Up.

Artwork 1980's to 1990's

Peter Surrena weetstraw

This is a piece of artwork that resembles of a magazine cover. The graphical elements that reduces the impact of the visual language is the typography and the arts tyle. The typography features a horrible pink that makes the the word illegible. The use of the pink immediately make me think of 80's work as featuring ugly colour scheme. This would have made it really difficult for me to create an effective cover with a creative and visually pleasing colour scheme due to a lack of inspiration.

With that done, I am going to analyse the meaning of the signifiers.  This is a technology based magazine cover inspired by the 80's. The shows a computer that connotes that the articles in magazine covers computers. The computer monitor had larger internal hardware that made them massive (depth). The design looks busy as a result of the character appearing on the screen multiple times. There is a character wear 80's design glasses that iconically signifiers a computer geek.

Tom Ralston

This is another example of 1980's and 1990's art featuring that horrible colour known as pink. The pink is used for the electricity. The overall design features too dynamic colour scheme that makes the electricity one of the main focal points. The colour of the pink looks stronger due to the glow effect applied to make electricity effect to make an impact

The this is a poster advertising the best and worst videos on the Toronto film festival. The size of the video suggests that the video tape contains loads of videos that everybody can watch at the festival.

The arbitrary signifier, Vengeance, is a very powerful word that makes the image of the tape look striking. As it is really strong, the word is made the main focal point. This connotes that VHS is coming back to the festival.

The connotation of the video being revived is reinforced by the gesture of the hand. The audience can only see the top part of the the arm and hand. The  positioning and feel of the image resembles a hand sticking out from the ground.

Artists

ALLAN MCCOLLUM

Allan Mccollum is a well known for putting different images into one area. Image on the right features symbolic signifiers that have no reference that no one can recognise. Each image of the artwork is different, therefore, it requires the viewer to look at the art more than one.

Famous Artist from the and Photographers 1950's ( artwork inspired by the mid 20th century)

Artwork inspired by 1960's Chris Gall

At this time, I have already read The Outsiders and I took the decision to create a book cover for this story. To help me with my development, I need to analyse mid 20th century art and photographers.  I will justify why I did not create a book for What a Carve Up.

This is a surf style type of artwork with a 1960's feel. The iconic signifiers of the 1950's are the vehicle and the graphical elments. The image features 1950's style of car having surfboards on the roof. The connotes that mid 20th century was a period when the surf culture was first popularised.  The image has a style of a comic because the rectangles represent the sun light, which is usually used in classic comics.

The overall design gives a sense of calmness due to the use of sunset and the trees. Although the colour scheme is striking, the blue compliments the yellow and allows it to blend well.

Another Striking characteristic of Chris Gall's work is the shadows. Zooming into the image reveals that shadows are stripes rather than solid shapes.

Emiliano Ponzi has successfully made the design represent 1950's-60's America by inserting a mid 20th century building and a car.  I can see that the poster uses iconic symbolisers: a bear, people and a bear. The image shows couple driving a car with a bear as passenger.  This connotes that the company has been providing very exciting road trips that allow people to see the wild life for 25 years

The imagery of the advent features historic objects. American muscle cars in this period feature one wheel that is mostly covered by the exterior shell and massive lights at the front of the car.  All of the American iconic 1960's signifiers combined enable the advert to use of a retro feel to inform the audience the 25th Anniversary.

Anther iconic signifier that symbolises this country is the route sign. This is a route sign  The design of the sign is generally associated with the 1960's because they make appearances in movies set in the period, like The Outsiders. No other country in the world does use this symbol for guiding traffic. People living in non-English countries who use different symbols for their alphabet may not know the word 'route'.

Shaunaparmesan
Unlike the other examples, this poster features vintage designed text that provides a retro feel. This poster is a message for  people who want better luck with their lives. The two most recognisable arbitrary signifier that symbolises America are the typefaces with curly letters' the luckeir'  and that resemble tire marks. The curly text on a donative level  were commonly used on American diners' signs, this therefore, enhances the American retro feel. The style of the other font has a characteristic of a burnt tire marks due to the style of the serifs. The design of the brackets and serif enable the text to achieve this effect. The design is relevant because burnt tires symbolises a period where gangs used to drive their cars at a fast pace to win a race.

These is another piece of artwork that is inspired by the mid 20th century graphic styles, colour and typography. The image on the right feature iconic imagery that signify a well known product that is generally used to store a drink. The image shows stacked up cups that has text written on them. The arbitrary sign, the text, suggests to the reader that coffee is the tool for waking people up.

As for the imagery, the lighting effects give the cups' design depth. The Gestalt principle, continuation, occurs on both sides of the cup. The design attribute is implemented  to ensure that the audience's eyes are compelled to view the cups and  read the text.

Other Materials

A famline woman smoking and sitting down
next to a type writter

A girl posing with 1960's styles of clothes

All of these images featured typography and elegant graphics styles inspired by the fifties. Majority of the typography  seen use the gestalt principle known as continuous. They compels the audience eyes to follow a path through worlds. This occurs in the first the poster featuring a woman smoking. The script designed typeface uses curves to entice the reader to read the rest of the word.  On the third poster though, the curve of the feathers catches the attention of the reader and compels to read the word 'Barely legal oc'.

The second image of famous products from this period features very bold slab serifs. The typography is legible because there is enough kerning between the characters. It offers readability because the colour of the second letters creates an anomaly. To me an elegant designed book covers will enable me to produce book covers that appeal to children.

1960's photographers

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was a well known photographer who took photoshop of poor people living in shany towns. All of her photos taken also represents her traumatic experiences of feeling abandoned by her father. The emotion conveyed in the photos usually range from sadness to hopelessness.

The photo on the right shows the location where people live on very poor section of the wealth scale live. The  connotes people with no money available having to wear ripped and dirty clothes and live in buildings made of spare wood in order to survive. All three people have  face expressions that show a sense of hopelessness due to the American depression causing them to struggle to collect food and gain money to keep warm. This type of image is  featured in history books about the depression. Now they are regularly used to make a charity poster look very emotional and shocking to potential donators.

The image only features black and white. Cameras created during the depression were not capable of allowing people to take coloured photographs. In a way, this characteristic reinforces the emotional theme, especially sadness. To take this photo, she must of had to make the people to give her permission. To get the most emotional shots, she must taken lots of photographs and then chose the most effective one.

In contrast this photograph shows sense of happiness.  This image uses the iconic signifiers, a happy girl and a ball, to create an big and emotional impact. These signs form a picture that shows a girl playing  basket ball with her friend. In a way, this creates a sense that poor children band together to enjoy their hostile life.

The lighting effects makes the children the main focal point. The photographers aim with this effect is to compel the audience to view the children's faces and their emotions. As this photo features a lot of children, the layout looks very busy.

Declan Haun

Declan Haun is another great photographer who was often known for showing respect for people who appear in the photographs. He was devoted to show passion for social and culture subjects and the 'process of photography' by crafting high quality prints that evoke the topic.

This photo represents The Civil Right Movement for Black Americans. Black Americans in North Coalina started protesting to the local authorities to tell the government they have the right to justice. The arbitrary signifier, justice, is a powerful element on the photograph that tells a story of a woman feeling angry about the exile of Robert Williams. This photo of a woman holding a piece of paper looks very sad and in a way makes the audience feel angry about the people discriminating other races of people.
