Bio and Outsiders context
S.E Hinton was born on the 22nd of July 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She enjoyed reading books as a kid but the literature featured in the books never lived up to her expectations. In 1967, the publisher Viking made a her first novel available to the public, The Outsiders.
After this, she became a household name but the publicity gave her a lot of pressure. This prevented her from producing books for 3 years. However, the block was broken due to her depression and her sick boyfriend instructing her to write two pages a day. She eventually produced a book that was thought out than The Outsiders Known as That Was Then, Now is Now in 1971. It was around that time period that she got married.
1983 was important year for the author because a movie adaption was produced. The movie version of the Outsiders was realised in March of 1983. She gave birth to David in August of the same year.
Around the mid to late 80's, That Was Then, Now Was Now was also adapted in the year of 1985. Hinton was the first author to be awarded with the 'YASD/SLJ Author Achievement Award, which was given by the Young Adult Services Division of the American Library Association and School Library Journal.'

Other Books
TEX
In terms of design, TEX's Book cover features a man riding on a motor cycle and staring directly at the reader. The design of the motor cycle reminds me a model used in motor racing. As this image has iconic signifiers that already exists, there is nothing from the world of imagination.
This book cover mainly uses very iconic signifiers to help cover to tell a story. The main iconic signifiers is the man wearing denim clothing and the motorcycle. On a donative level, this is a keen motorcyclist. The denim featured on his clothing makes me associate him with America because I always visualise this material with the country. This is relevant because the setting of the story is in the Oklahoma, a state of the country. As this plot uses a crime setting, the dress code is not broken because a lot of different book covers with this theme feature similar imagery.
Another iconic signifiers are the grass, mud and trees. The signifies on the denotation level that this is the countryside. The use of the countryside in the book cover suggests that the character and his family/friends. live in a farm in a rural area.
The title is arbitrary and an iconic signifier that refers to the name of the main character. As the author lived in the state mentioned previously, it is a possibility that TEX is a common male name.
In terms of composition, the title is made the main focal point due to its large scale and colour scheme. Overall the book cover looks clean because the image is positioned in the centre of a geometrical shape, the square.
As red and black creates a large contrast, it enables text to have a 3D appearance. However, the use of a very thick black stroke decreases the negative area, therefore the tracking does not look right. The colour of text matches with the motorcycle to ensure there is consistency in the design. The red is very symbolic because the colour featured in the flag of Oklahoma, which is the setting of the story.
Unlike the previous example, this specific book cover for Ramble Fist ( THE REFERENT) sets set serious tone to make a massive impact to the audience. The most important feature of the overall design is their serious face expression. This helps the book to signifiy on a denotation level that this is a crime themed book cover. Their face expressions suggests that they are from a tough neighbourhood and maybe they commit crime on a regularly basis.
As this book was published in the 1980's, the techniques used for this artwork would have included sketching. The men feature very detail colours, including, highlights and shadows) that make the design look vintage and masculine due to the lighting effects. It is expected for the artist to complete the drawings within a 1 to 2 weeks.

Rumble Fish
This book cover shows two men playing snooker in a dark room. The imagery reminds me of old photos of the mafia enjoying their leisure time. It tells a story of one man playing snook and another standing behind him to ensure that they look threatening to others in the room.Unlike the previous example, this specific book cover for Ramble Fist ( THE REFERENT) sets set serious tone to make a massive impact to the audience.
