More Guidelines

These are the images of Visit England’s branding guidelines. This is a classic example where there is detailed information on how the designer should represent the company. The most noticeable content as the designer is the diagrams of spacing. There is a graph showing a safe area where the logo cannot enter. The information suggests that the empty space needs accommodating to ensure the logo design makes an impact.

This is a classic where the documentation successfully has hierarchy The extra bold text catches my attention and strikes as a warning sign. Having the title the main content is a good sign that the documentation is professionally planned and design. As for the content, there is a clear demonstration on what not to apply for the design. Although the content is a bit worthy for this purpose, it is essential for design to be aware of the rules.

This guideline specifies the default cover design. The rose on the cover must be transparent on a red background.

Allowing the reader about the expectations before reading the content is a good characteristic that all documents with this nature should have. There is a graph that provides a clear insight of the  choice of colours and their meanings.

This is an interesting analysis of a branding guideline. The length of content in this documentation is quite short. The content below features very small paragraphs, which all of them have one sentence each.  This is the most effective way of providing clear guidelines to designers.

The image above demonstrates how colour is an essential element that portrays a company. This intuition have corporate colours that signify heritage and modernism. There is technical information about the colour tint levels. There is justification of why they cannot make the colour too tinted. The low quantity of content is a common feature that appears on both page.

Holiday and time management

Hi guys, I just as well give you an update on my work. I have finished the product and majority of the poster. As for the branding guidelines, I have gathered up all of content and planned my designs. This will enable me to create the documentation with ease. I will then also write an essay about my design decisions and why my solution suits with brief.

Typography idea and justfication

I had success with experimenting with having stripes traveling through the body of the outsider. It manages to manipulate the figure and ground, making the design captivating.  Illustrations of a pair of jean were included to represent the clothes that the Greaser wore.

As for my font, I have two versions of the finished product. I have one with Fjord because this font has a large cap size, making it legible. The font design enables people to read the read at a nice pace due to altering its leading. The other consists Gill Sans. This san serif font fits more with the theme of The Outsiders because it looks modern compared to serif text.

Before I  go into detail about this new idea, Geo San was applied author's name on the spine. This is to ensure that the word provides clarity. The author's name on the front cover is presented as having a script type font that is inspired by the Mister Retro's kit. This was selected because the font's stem is not heavy as Geomancy's. This enabled the design to create a contrast, which is thick and thin. The benefit of applying this characteristic is that it allows the audience to differentiate the author's name from the title.

As for this grand idea, I took a photograph of a graphic showing a silhouettes feature text in its upper part of the body. I thought that having the keywords of the story would entice parents and children to read the book because it gives them an exciting preview. However, legibility was issue that prevented me from applying this graphic in the design. However, this idea could be a factor that brings the book poster design to a new level. This concept is original and ideal because it deviates from typical books posters showing a book on a table, which is not imaginative. However, I think that rather having a normal table there should a either table that looks American in the design.

Update and references

This is my first update of the week. I have finished my final product and completed part of my book poster. However, if I see something that adds to the design, I may experiment with the idea. I have been doing a lot of sketches on my book to experiment with the concepts.

Today, I want to insert my references for my graphics and fonts:

Now research into branding guidelines

I have briefly touched on about what to include into a guideline and defining it. Today is the research.

Jamie Oliver’s branding guidelines
http://issuu.com/bellfrog/docs/jamie-oliver-frv-brand-guidelines

Jamie Oliver is a well known TV personality that specialises in cooking. The individual presents cooking based programs on multiple channels and operate a chain of restaurants and food products. This is one of many branding guidelines.

This first page of the documentation provides a clear insight of the context of the guideline. It basic reveals that the document aims to provide specific instructions on about producing food materials with his name on the label. Overall the introduction is effective because it keeps it to the brief and uses a good modern serif typeface.

Through out the document, the colour iconicity signifies a fresh feel. The chroma and value on some colours are significant enough to allow Jamie Oliver’s branding guideline to suggests that his products are fresh and organic. This shows me that the colour needs to correspond with the themes of the brand or book(in my case).

Values

The brand’s values is a key aspect of allowing designers to convey the right feel in their designs. The documentation provides a short paragraph of what the chef believes in.  To clearly demonstrate his beliefs, there is a clear list containing the values. ‘Honest and Challenge-being direct’ is a great example of values that demonstrates that the final design should not misleading and is able to engage the customer.

Colour

Typography

The documentation gives very specific guides the use of typography. The guidelines states that the product name should uppercase Futura to ensure legibility and clarity. It also justifies why it should be only applied in this circumstances, which is to make a classic feel. There displays the many typefaces in this particular font. The demonstrates the justification clearly to the designers.

The serif font should be only use for the content in lower levels of hierarchy, such as the product description, to ensure that the content is clear and eligible even at small size.

Before I move onto the next example, I want to strongly mention the logo. To clearly show to the designers that this is only logo design should only be inserted into the product design. There is a precise  and comprehendible grid that shows people what do display as the logo. I think that this is really essential because designers need to a designer need clearly product a design representing the brand.

Book guideline and what not to do

John Wiley and Son is a famous book publisher that has a unreadable branding guideline. There is a website delicate to inform authors about the book dimensions, the submit ion process and other essential information. Instead of presenting the information with images and typography that looks natural to the eye, there are loads of paragraphs of content with not drop caps, start points and clear graphs. This method of presenting guidelines is unreadability because of those things mentioned above. The content even includes a detailed paragraph about copyright.

times that focuses on logo. The documentation consists of a simple table of contents that allow the reader to find specific information. Many of the subheadings in the content’s page suggests that this primarily informs designers how to present the logo.

This is a clear diagram on what colours to apply in order for the design work to meet the brief. The image must have a logo showing a black or white square on a square that makes the characters leigible. The specify given this colour scheme to ensure that the logo’s colour scheme does not clash. I would say that they should include hexadecimal, RBG and CMYK values to ensure that the designer implement the precise colours.

There is a section of documentation that is an interesting. Two company logos can be inserted into a co-advert but they have to be smaller than the Financial Time’s logo.

However there are multiple choices for the positioning of these logos. These images can be positioned on a horizontal line if the detailed content is positioned on the lower half of the image. Information earlier in the document that all logos should located with distance of 5%  away from the image’s border. (margin).

some new inspriation and update

Before I go into detail about this artist's art style, I want to tell you the audience that I will be posting a another post about branding guidelines. This one will also include an analysis into book adverts.

This is a great retro designed poster that has taught me a thing or two. I have concluded that any type of font can be inserted into a retro image because the font used would be the last one use in this type of design. Even though the script face font is not retro, with the large contrast between the background and the text colour makes it comes across as retro. Now I am going to experiment with basic fonts for my main body content.

I also admire this design agencies overall products. This one in particular is a very elegant designed image developed by Spike Press because the main character feature curves that compels my eyes . The shoes in particular interest me because the stroke design is thin, making elegant. Having the t-shirt colour matching with the skin is a feature  I want to explore because I want the image the Greaser to kill the product.  To represent the outsider, I will not apply any facial features. Applying this into my book cover attract to the female audience.

Here are other designs produced by this company.

Presentation.

As I have presented my second pitch I just as well review the performance and the feedback. Compare to the last attempt, I feel this presentation was more professional and did not feature the level 3 structure . I went into less detail about my research and thoroughly talked about my development, including art inspirations. I felt that people understood my art director due to me describing my graphics and justifying my decisions.  The overall presentation theme was enhanced due to the use of American sign positioned on a semi plain background. Having a simple background was less distracting for the audience and enabled my text to be viewed.

This feedback was very constructive, therefore I found it useful to take note. The overall impression of this pitch was very positive. The compliments included me keeping number of slides to a minium, taking about my inspirations, well prepared and showing very good mock ups.

As they were mock ups, there were bound to be things that my peers liked, and ideas that did not work.  Many of my peers thought that I have thought outside the box by making the imagery not having a clear relationship with the story. Some liked the idea of them guessing what the image is showing.  The overall American sign feel, colour scheme and designs were both complimented by many peers. One peer thought that my visual language skills are advancing because I add graphical elements that just makes the design look captivating.

As for improvements, some people rightly said that the second mock up should have a better image of the Greaser. To a more of important note, a peer who is not familiar with the books said that having the Greaser on the font cover is too overpowering and unclear. Although some type design needed to improve, I strongly stressed during the presentation that these fonts were not my final choices.

From this point, I am doing more research into book covers and art work from retro designers to get more ideas. Hopefully this will be done within a week.

Previous winners

This article consists of previous winners of the Puffins Book competitions.

1

This is the book cover that was first place on last year's competition. This vibrant book cover mainly consists of two illustrations of a toad, the famous character of the story. In a book cover, there is the title, author, the publisher logo and the description. The design has done a successful job of getting the level of hierarchy by having text 4 times bigger than the main body text.

The positioning the all of the text inside a rectangle that makes the layout look clean. Positioning the arm of the second toad over the rectaangle gives an impression that the toad is carrying a banner.

In this cover, there are two toads wearing prison uniform. This iconic signifier symbolises a section of the story were the toad was sent into confinement by the weasels. The first toad's looking directly at the reader  and other toad looking horizontally resembles of famous photographs of prisoners having their photo with a number on them.

2

This is another example of a book cover for the Wind In The Willows. The designer uses artistic and Victoriana theme to make it look captivating to the eye. The hand drawn elements gives cover historic feel to connote  that the book was written a long time ago. Unlike the previous example the image design looks calm and a bit elegant due to leafs' design.

Overall this is a book cover showing two of the famous characters rowing on a river. This impact shows the mole sitting whists the rat rowing underneath the an umbrella. On a connotation level, the umbrellas suggests that these characters are ridding a boat on a bright sunny day.  The bright green and blue paints a scene where the characters are surrounded by a lush countryside.

As for the arbitrary symbols, the text, the title stands out because it is positioned on a bright background. Inverting the colours for the middle section of the cover enables the design look dynamic and the audience to differentiate the spin from the spine.

3

This is a great book cover that uses a very aggressive colour, red, to ensure that the audience's attention. The rich red enables the tongue of the of the wolf to be the main focal point. The cover uses positioning to create a scene where the children are going to stand on the tongue. Having the spine of the book showing a tree bark to give the overall scene depth.

In terms of colour, black is the primary colour that creates a dark setting. This primary colour symbolises night time and very dark areas that are dangerous. This enhances the threatening wolf who looks like he is luring the children to his mouth.

The black also compliments the white text. The use of black and white makes the type design resemble chalk.

In semiotics, this is a dark book cover image of a dark forest with a large wolf, children and glowing eyes.  The most powerful signifiers are the tongue and the the eyes. The eyes connotes that the children are unknowably been inspected by animal life.  The dark forest conveys that this adventure is dangerous and would involve the children to encounter wildlife.

Why not What A Carve Up and other 1980's art.

Just after we were given the brief, immediately purchase both books. Unknowing that I had to understand both book to get the visual into my head an then process them into mind maps. I managed to read The Outsiders(reason in the previous post). and then What A Carve Up.

I have already mentioned the summary and context of the book in the previous post. When read the content in the book, I thought that What A Carve is a very political driven book. It uses many iconic signifiers that symboliseis presents the Margret Thatcher Era and the upper class society of this country.

The introduction of the book  reveals the names of the  Winshaw family members. Names like Mortifer  are generally upperclass names that immediately think the plot focuses on the rich family.  I thought that the introduction of the story was too long, therefore, it started to loose my attention before the main story started.

A sign of relief occurs when the story focuses on a journalist who depises Hilary Winshaw.  From this point of the story, I knew that plot involve this person exploring the Hilary and her family. After the section where Fiona and Michael Owen interacts with each other, I though that the story was already too long. To encourage myself to read the book, I search for a summary on the site to help me understand the rest of the story. I attempted to read through the story but the long lengtht of the chapters discouraged me to follow the story.

Not being able to read the book completely was the primary reason that I decided to develop a book cover for The Outsiders. Producing a cover for a book that was uninteresting and did not allow me to get inspiration would have caused me to create a design that does not meet both the University's and the Puffin Book's brief.

Development story More book covers, retro Imagery and colour experiments with type

Imagery inspriation

As on the development, I need to get my inspiration to create the best imagery for my book cover.  I will justify why these potential imagery were chosen. This includes what they signify.

For the art style, I will use a variety of bitmap and vector based images to meet the breif's requirements. The design will consists of mainly of illustrations to make the visual language to  appeal to 12 year olds and the parents who purchases the books on their children's behalf. These illustrations will have traits of the 1960's art by applying blocks of shadow, making more dynamic. This is seen on the image of girl crying.

The images of the Pepsi Cola bottle and the American diner makes obvious that the background imagery signifies a story that takes place in 1960's America. The book implies that the Greasers mostly favour drinking Pepsi over Cola. The American diner usually have signs above, this would be a great idea for the authors name to be presented as the sign. The typography used on signs have elements of script typeface, making the author's name look vintage. This image is appropriate because the an American diner does appear in the story.

I was inspired by design of mustang because car looks masculine and iconically signifies the Socs. The mustang must be a bitmap an image to make it noticeable. I also like its perspective because it enables the vehicle more captivating and empowering. The shadow also gives it more tension.  This could bring an opportunity to use anomlmy to enhance the impact of the mustang. There might be a row of illustrations of the side mustang but there will be another one that has the same perspective as the image above.

This is the second mood board that I have been inspired me these images as a possible theme. The cartoon character and the cyanon would make a big impact in the visual language.  Presenting cigarettes as cyanons would most likely cause a reaction from the audience. Combining two elements that people cannot imaging that they would be associated together will come as a surprise. This would make the box make the cover portray an interesting story for their children, which would entice parents to purchase this story.

At this moment, I thinking of applying a newspaper theme if I go follow a path of applying very dramatic scenes of the story.  This would include the cinema, fountain, and the church scenes. Rather than use a plain old newspaper, I intend to use the style used by Mister Retro designs. His designs contain features that look elegant, masculine, comical and sad. The use of the graphic style would make the story look vibrant and interesting to the young audience.

Another feature that I may apply to is differentiate the Greasers from the ordinary citizens is the use of figure and ground. All of the people surrounding them look normal but the Greasers may not feature a fill colour or texture. I intend to make the stroke the background is the foreground  whistle the stroke is the background. To achieve this effect I might use a puddle of Coca Cola showing the reflection of this.

More detail examples of inspiration

One of the styles of drawing that I would like to develop is the drawing made of artistic strokes. Jorge Colmbo's art work looks very captivating because the imagery look like it has been drawn by a brush. This would make the book cover look artistic. This art style is relevant to the 1960's because computers did not exist at that time and artist relied on brushes, screen printing, and pencils to create the work around the 20th century. To me, the art style causes black of the silhouettes to be more striking to the eye. This is good because this might be the graphical that could make the ramble or the church scenes look very powerful.  The only issue with this making the illustrations of the character look clear enough to see.

This is an impact of a countryside road that signifies America due to the design of the road. The road features a lot of hills and the bright sun signifies that this road is located in the Southern States.  This type of landscape might be the ideal type of background that is needed to make obvious to the audience that this story is based in the United States. This image would good cover for the  overall design because I can create the front page showing the night sky whilst the second a bright sunny day. This would create one large state for the covers.

To emphasise that gangs are involved, I thought it would be an idea to create a logo for each gang. The Greasers would most likely have a cone with greasy hair surrounding it whilst the Soc will have logo showing woman, grades, cars and among other things. This is an essential tool for allowing the audience to understand the differences between them, thus creating a sneak preview for the reader.

Development story: typography and colour choices justified.

In response of those mood boards that I developed two posts ago, I thought of expanding the colour and typography ideas and justify them.

Primary possible colour scheme

As I stated that specific post, I aimed to have retro colour scheme that is either conveys suspicious or an intense theme.

Mister Retro

As you can see from on the image above, the first colour scheme is inspired by the Mister Retro's artwork. This colour scheme uses different shades of blue to create a design that features colours that blend well.  The light blue represents the highlights, mid blue for the mid tones and the darker blue for the shadow.  This is a great example of a colour pallet that uses similar colours that prevents the design from coming across as dull. Blue does compliments the red  black very well. The dark blue enables the red to be striking, therefore, making it the main focal point.

This is a potential colour scheme because one of my designs includes a night  and a day scene. The dark blue represents the night time whilst the light blue is the day time sky colour. These two colours have got the right saturation that prevents them from coming too striking.  In terms of imagery, blue is iconic because the Soc's mustangs are that specific colour. This colour has also leave me with loads of options. The colour scheme will enable a calm or a dangerous scene to work because blue is associated with different moods: calm, excitement and mystery. Red is a colour that is associated with the American diner. This colour will enable the sign containing the text to stand out. It may enhance the power of the words because red comes across as aggressive. I will not attempt to use this colour as blood because this has to appeal to parents and their children who are in the 8-15 age demographic.

Mister Retro 2

Unlike the first example, the Motorphycho image looks too striking for the audience. However, the colour of the background, cream, appeals to a board audience. It is clean and would enable the blue to look captivating. Cream is a good choice for representing the road marks because it compliments grey, which is the colour of American roads. Applying this into one of my design will create a scheme that has different contrast of colour, making the visual more appealing to the target audience.

San Francisco and Work hard

The one thing that these two images have in common is the use of the colour orange. Orange is the perfect colour for reprinting metal, fire or an image with a dynamic colour scheme. Orange is iconic signifier that symbolises the colour of the Oklahoma flag. This would make obvious to people who are aware about the flag that this story is based in this stage without knowing the book. This is also good colour to bring tension into the design because blue and orange are on the opposite sides of the colour wheel, making them completely different.

Both colour schemes also include blue. The blue with the purple tint is particularly effective because the colour would enhance the impact of the shadows. This will give the design more depth, therefore, making it more captivating to the audience. I do thing that black such a negative colour, this colour will do the design justice because it make the strokes look different.

These are other examples of colours from images that were selected due to their iconic imagery. Most of them though have too many colour that will create too many

The sun set image has got the best colour scheme. Instead of using saturated and primary colours the range have a faded appearence to make the colours of the sunset look clean and relaxing. Blue, green and yellow are not usually a great combination but due good use of saturation levels, they all blend in. I also feel that these colours enable the bright orange light and the black hills to stand out. This could be beneficial for the hills and the lighting effects because America is well known for having bright sun light.

For my font choices, these are just examples of text I intend to use to symbolise many aspects of the story and conveys a retro feel.  I intend to either pay for a very good set of fonts or alter these examples in Illustrator.

The text above is inspired by the Mister Retro. The interior sections of the text features a thin stroke that makes the character resembles a road. The font design complements The Outsiders theme because many scenes feature roads. To ensure that message is conveyed, the font's inner stroke will be dashed. There should not be any shadows or other effects accompanying the design because may reduce the space for the counters. To make this readable, figure and ground should be applied. The dashed lines should appear as if they have entered the text to ensure that title looks interesting.

Although this is not to scale, I feel that to provide the best reading experience, the main body should be serif. To ensure the the 1960's theme is conveyed, I will design my own serif text that readable and has aspects from the story.  The serif should have enough kerning to prevent the serif being illegible.  As for the leading, I aim not  to separated too much to ensure that the audience can read it in appropriate pace.  I am also applying drop caps that features a style representing the imagery, the gangs or the scenes to ensure that the text is captivating. The main body text should be 4x smaller than the heading.

This is another example of a font with a tine outline. I decided chose this possible font style because it looks masculine, a characteristic of both gangs. This will give the overall design a sense of power and sets a crime based theme. To appeal to a female audience, I would have to present it in a way catches their attention. This could range from a menu, Coca Cola or an American sign.  To make the text illegible, the r's appearances  needs changing because the positioning of the counter and the curve makes it resemble of a n.

This would be a great opportunity to create an anomaly make a certain word stand out. This font may possibility be used for the letter 'the'. This ensure that the text is readable.

This a font that has great characteristics.  The design of the characters makes me associate this with American diner at the time of the 1960's.  The design features  capital letters that exceeds the cap and x height. In a way, it is considered as a drop cap, therefore it makes the text readable. The positioning of the cross bar is another attribute that makes this font appealing to look at.

The only issue I have with the text is the outline. I think that  the type face design should get rid off the stroke because it makes it little bit illegible. I think that having a thick fill is a great solution for enhancing the text design. It will be more legible and have still a characteristic of an American diner.

This is a great font that can be effectively used for presenting the author's name. Although it is a script face, it looks modern because the counters are not geometrical. The design of the ascender features a curve that signifies hand drawn writing very well. This is appropriate because many retro artist use this type of font to create a visual language that feels nostalgic. This type of font would be a great addition to the newspaper idea. This will present the art style of 60's to a new generation.

This is the last font that really caught my attention. The design of the san serif makes me associated the design of the font with tire marks.  Tire marks would be a great design to implement because it signifies that these outsiders are breaking the rules by breaking the speed limit on a regular basis. I also think that will bring tension for the mustang and signifies that the car is really fast.
